Parent AI Safety Checklist

A 20-minute setup for using AI with a teen 13-17 without blind trust, panic, or hidden data sharing.

Before Use

  • Confirm the teen is 13 or older and an adult knows they are using AI.
  • Choose the external AI tool together and review its age terms.
  • Agree that AI is a helper, not a private diary or decision-maker.
  • Decide which school assignments allow AI and which do not.

Never Enter

  • Names, school names, addresses, exact schedules, or contact details.
  • Passwords, private family details, payment data, photos, or voice.
  • Health, legal, crisis, body-image, sexuality, violence, or age-restricted questions.
  • Other people's private information.

Every Output

  • Ask: what did AI assume?
  • Check important claims against a source or adult.
  • Rewrite in the teen's own words.
  • Disclose AI help when school policy or the task expects it.
